While it is tempting to not work on your nonprofit’s capacity building (there are only so many hours in a day, after all), it’s imperative if that nonprofit is going to survive. There are fewer and fewer donors (especially large ones) these days, and this can become a downward spiral very fast if time is not taken to build the right relationships to create sustainable giving.
The attached article is going to say that getting a “hired gun” to do your fundraising is a poor way to accomplish your goals. I’m a “hired gun,” and I’m going to say the author is correct. There are only certain conditions I allow myself to be hired into to help nonprofits with their fundraising, and one is a commitment to long-term capacity growing beyond working with me.
